Children’s Hand Bells—The children at Cottonwood, ages preschool through 5th grade, will swing into spring and practice hand bells with Cottonwood’s Hand Bell Director, Wayne Shutts. Practice will be during the first 20 minutes of the Sunday School hour and continue into March. Please have your child/children ready in class by 9:30. The children will ring the bells during their performance at the 11:00 service on March 21st.
CHURCH SCHOOL LENT STUDIES
The children of Cottonwood will participate in the 11:00 Worship service on Sunday, March 7, for The World Day of Prayer. They will bring in bread from around the world for communion. (Thank you, Pat!) Parents, please have your children meet in the narthex at 10:50 to participate.
Also, on March 7, the children and their parents are invited to a bowling party in the afternoon. More details to follow, so keep an eye on your e-mail. This fun activity is unrelated to World Day of Prayer, except possibly prayers for safe bowling! It is designed to simply have a good time outside of Church.
We hope the children and their families can join both activities on this special day.
Later in March, on Sunday, March 21 to be exact, the children will perform with bells and singing during the 11:00 worship service. Wayne Shutts and Jeanette Flynn have been teaching the kids the music each week during Sunday School, starting at 9:30am. We know the congregation will love listening to the children during this special Lent performance.
COTTONWOOD PRESBYTERIAN … A PLACE FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN
WELCOMING CHILDREN IN WORSHIP
“Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” Mark 9:37
We believe at Cottonwood that worship is an essential way we learn what it means to be Christian. By enabling children to worship with their families, and the larger church family, every Sunday, they learn that they belong to Christ and are welcome in his church. They learn the Lord’s Prayer, participate in communion, witness baptism, and other parts of the liturgy.
In addition to the enrichment they receive in worship, Children’s Church School reinforces church worship and follows the Liturgical calendar. They hear stories from the Bible read and interpretted. They are enriched by the beauty of music and art as expressions of praise and as their responses to God. They build a store of the accumulated shared experiences of Christian community from which they may draw when they are older. They discover that they are valued as persons by God and by the people of God.

The photos were taken during the Advent season. Each Sunday in Advent the children made doves that represented hope, peace, faith, and love. They presented their home made church offering boxes which went to support mission in the community. The children sang for the congregation on the eve of the Hanging of the Greens and Sunday church service.
The Lenten Season is upon us. The children will learn that Lent is the season when we prepare ourselves for Easter. During the series of Lent lessons the children will participate in fun, age appropriate activities which will help to impart the meaning of Lent to the children. Recently the children had the opportunity to express themselves through painting. This art was done as the children were moved by the music of God-short notes of the piano and swirls of the harp. The music also reminded them of God’s creation and the blessings of the earth.
The children’s choice for Summer Church School is to again do activities that will focus on mission projects in the Church and the community. The activities will run during June, July, and August. All children are welcome.
