WHY DO YOU SERVE? “BECAUSE I CAN.”
When asked why he serves as an elder at Cottonwood, the individual said, “Because I can.” The same response was given by a woman who serves as deacon. In the discussion that followed, each, in their own words, shared that they have the particular gifts, skills, and interests that are needed in their particular roles and thus they felt “called” to use those gifts in the service of God through Cottonwood Presbyterian.
Each year, the Nominating Committee seeks other active members who feel “called” to serve. The Bible says that God has given everyone spiritual gifts for the purpose of building up God’s church. Paul tells the Corinthians, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” He goes on to say, in I Corinthians 12:12-31, that God has given each of us different gifts so that we may work together, just as parts of the body, to be the body of Christ in our world.
If you’re not sure what your gifts are, the Nominating Committee will be happy to give you a “spiritual gifts inventory,” a self-assessment that may cause you to think of your abilities and interests in a different way. It may help you to discern a “call” to be part of a committee or in a leadership role at Cottonwood.
Together, we can make Cottonwood the church God needs us to be.
